85. The Hudson's Bay Company no longer operates a small trading post 
but a large department store.
86. The processed foods they sell are high in sugars and fats.

87. The merits of the juices are commonly outweighed by starchy foods.
88. Spreads are much in demand ...
89. And soft drinks even more so.

90. For those who can no longer hunt,
frozen hamburgers and pork chops can be purchased instead . . .
91. . . . as well as ice cream.

92. Due to the town’s relative inaccessibility prices are high and 
as a result a large part of every welfare cheque goes on food.
93. The foods obtained in this way while they avoid 
the hardships of hunting are nowhere near as nutritious.
94. In fact, at one stage all we had in our fridge 
were ice blocks and frozen blueberries.
95. Resident "outsiders" like school teachers
typically order a year's groceries
in advance (direct from suppliers in the South)
and store these at home.
96. There is a small fresh foods section at "the ‘Bay".

97. In winter vegetables are flown in from California or Florida.
98. Bread, too, arrives by air: so does the fruit.
99. However, because of the freight rates involved 
few people can afford to buy fruit (even blackened bananas). 
A single pineapple could cost you $25! .

100. As a result while the merits of traditional 
"Eskimo" foods low in harmful fats are 
expounded in Europe and  America, 
the actual diet of the Inuit today has deteriorated greatly, 
and with it their standard of health.
